Must

Use of Must:

Must is a defective verb. It has no past form. It is used to express present or future obligation.

1. Must is used to express commands, compulsion, order. e.g.

   (a) Soldiers must obey orders without any question.

   (b) All the girls must attend the function.

2. Must is also used to express, moral duty obligation. e.g.

    (a) We must respect our elders.

    (b) You must help your friends in need.

3. Must also expresses necessity, urgency, circumstancial compulsion. e.g.

    (a) I must leave now, otherwise I may miss the train.

    (b) The electricity will be cut off at 8 am, so I must complete my work before.

4. The use of must not expresses prohibition, emphatic advice. e.g.

    (a) Students must not resort to copying. (prohibition)

    (b) You must not miss the classes. (emphatic advice)

5. Must expresses strong probabilitylikelihood or logical persumption. e.g.

    She must be eighty now.

6. In questions introduced with must, if answered in affirmative, we use must, otherwise in negative  answer need not is used. e.g.

Must I attend the meeting?  (  Yes, you must. Or  No, you neednt )

7. The use of must with have + past participle of the main verb , shows a logical conclusion about a past event. e.g.

The roads are wet. It must have rained last night.

8. The use of must + have been shows certainty of a happening. e.g.

He must have been living here.
